Justin graduated from Indiana University – Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. His past experience includes five years of charter school experience at Xavier School of Excellence in South Bend where he started as a Teacher Aide and ended as School Team Leader. In 2014, he was an Indiana State Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist.
Kids Excel Coordinator
Rose received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from IUSB. She has served as a program director at a summer camp, supervised a group home for at-risk youth and developmentally disabled adults, worked as a Wraparound Facilitator for Elkhart County, and been a preschool teacher for Head Start for 15 years. In her free time, Rose coaches color guard and softball and loves to take long hikes at the dunes by Lake Michigan, where she is fortunate to live with her husband and their five children.
Caitlin graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Her past experience includes working for Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., and volunteering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County and the Center for the Homeless.
Mike graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Advertising, earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from IUSB, and a Master in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. He has worked as a salesperson, taught 7th/8th grade social studies in Niles, and served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Xavier School of Excellence in South Bend. Mike is an avid music and sports fan with 3 wonderful children and a beautiful wife, who is also a teacher.
Lead Coach/College Counselor
Jess graduated from Bethel College with a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Ministry and Adolescent Studies. Her past experience includes working as an Admission Counselor for Bethel College Office Admission for Undergraduate students.
Elizabeth graduated from St. Mary of the Woods with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and spent 16 years as an Enrolled Agent Tax Professional. For the last 6 years, she enjoyed working for Purdue Extension’s Nutrition Education Program, working with the Hispanic Community in particular. Her passion is collecting antiques.
Career Transition Counselor
Wernie holds a Master of Public Health with a focus in Behavioral Health from the University of South Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Health Science Education from the University of Florida. She has worked as Career Center Program Manager for Goodwill Industries in Florida, where she accumulated over six years of experience in Career Development & Community Support Services.
Jessica graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art. While at Taylor, Jessica traveled to Nepal, Costa Rica, and Mexico in order to work in orphanages and aid former victims of human trafficking. Her past experience includes working at Bethel College as an Admission Counselor.
Tewanna is a native of South Bend. After graduating from John Adams High School in 1997, she attended Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work, Family Education and Case Management Certificates. She obtained a Master of Science in Leadership from South University of Savannah, Georgia online. Tewanna has worked in Social Services for over ten years in the area of homelessness, peace learning, and finalizing permanency for youth.
Special Education Coordinator/Teacher
Lisa graduated from Ball State University and IUSB. She taught in the South Bend schools for 27 years, spending most of her career teaching Deaf children and children with disabilities. Horses are her passion, and she taught Reins of Life for 10 years.
Andra is a native of Mishawaka, IN. She graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and from Indiana State University with a Master of Arts in English. Prior to joining The Excel Center, Andra was the department chair for general education at Davenport University – South Bend and taught writing courses at Lake Michigan College and Southwestern Michigan College. When she isn’t helping students achieve their educational goals, Andra enjoys reading, trips to Chicago, and collecting recipes for dishes she will never cook.
Mary Catherine Wood
Mary Catherine graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and from IUSB with a Master of Science in Secondary Education. She has taught for 19 years (always in an “alternative” setting). Her passions are her cats (ask about them if you have a few hours to kill), hiking in national parks, and hockey (both playing and watching).
